Subwardens
What's Involved?
You'll work with a team of other subwardens in your residence, taking it in turns to provide an 'on-call' service during evenings and weekends. There's no typical subwarden experience, but your duties might include (but not be limited to) any of the following:
- dealing with noise complaints
- breaking up unauthorised parties
- admitting locked out students or new arrivals to their rooms
- helping new residents settle in
- offering help and advice to residents, in some cases signposting them to professional support services within the University e.g. Student Counselling/Nightline/Student Medical Practice
- being present in the Residence Office early evening to deal with enquiries or post collection
- walking around the site/performing locking up duties in the evening
- attending and sometimes providing support at social events organised by the Residents' Committee
- assisting in fire drills
- assisting in the University's policy on the misuse of illegal drugs
- acting as a link between the residence Warden(s), Residence Office staff and students
How often am I on duty?
At most residences, you are on duty one evening a week (typically 6pm to 8am) and one weekend in four (typically from 6pm Friday to 8am Monday) during term time. Aside from being present in the Residence Office (usually 6pm -7pm) and undertaking a 'walk round' and/or locking up duties on site in the evening, you will usually be at liberty to carry on with your studies/sleep as normal until you receive a call, provided that you keep the duty mobile phone with you at all times to deal with any issues that may arise (see the What's involved section above). In order to be effective, whilst on duty you should stay on site, or as close to the site as possible. In addition (though not frequently), you may also be called upon by a fellow subwarden on duty as 'back-up'.
